From Low to Top: How a Small Business Boosted Its Google Rankings
It all started with a call.
“Hi, I run a local HVAC business. We used to be on the first page of Google, but lately, our phones have gone quiet. Can you help us figure out what’s wrong?”
This story isn’t unique. In fact, 68% of online experiences begin with a search engine. If you’re not ranking well, your potential customers may never even know you exist.
Whether you’re running a law firm in New York, a boutique in Austin, or a dental clinic in Portland, your website is your digital storefront. And improving your website’s ranking is no longer optional, it’s a survival.
Let’s break down how we helped this business turn things around — and how you can improve your website rankings starting today.
Step 1: Know What’s Holding You Back
Before we touched a single line of code, we ran a detailed SEO audit. Here’s what we found:
- Site speed was sluggish (it took 7+ seconds to load).
- Thin content — only 200 words on key service pages.
- No local SEO signals — no Google Business Profile optimization, no local citations.
- Content gap — competitors were publishing 2–4 blogs per month.
- Poor internal linking — service pages weren’t linking to each other, missing SEO value and user flow.
👉 Pro tip: Run a free audit using tools like Google PageSpeed Insights or SEMrush.
Step 2: Fix the Foundation — Content, Structure & Speed
We rewrote the core service pages, each now with 700–1,000 words, structured using:
- H1, H2s, H3s for easy scanning
- Location-based keywords (e.g., “HVAC repair in Columbus, Ohio”)
- Clear CTAs and contact info above the fold
We also compressed images, removed unnecessary plugins, and upgraded to a faster hosting provider. Site speed improved from 7 seconds to under 2, a Google-recommended benchmark.
Step 3: Leverage Local SEO
Next, we:
- Optimized the Google Business Profile
- Got the business listed in 15+ local directories
- Encouraged satisfied customers to leave reviews
Why it matters: Businesses with 10+ Google reviews have a 12% higher chance of ranking in the local 3-pack.
Step 4: Build Topic Authority With Blogs
We created a content calendar with bi-weekly blog posts answering real customer queries like:
- “Why is my AC making noise?”
- “How much does HVAC repair cost in Ohio?”
This strategy expanded keyword reach, built trust, and gave Google fresh content to index regularly.
Results Within 90 Days
Here’s what the analytics looked like after implementing the strategy:
- Organic traffic increased by 62%
- Calls from the website doubled
- Top 5 keywords moved from page 3 to page 1 on Google
