Why Is My Business Not Showing on Google Maps?
Visibility on Google Maps doesn’t just happen automatically. It’s a combination of factors that Google uses to determine which businesses to display. Your business must meet Google’s criteria to appear in relevant searches. These criteria include relevance, proximity, and prominence.
Google uses data from your Google My Business (GMB) profile, customer reviews, and overall online presence to determine whether your business is displayed.
15 Reasons That May Be Hurting Your Google Maps Visibility
If your business isn’t appearing on Google Maps, one or more of these issues could be to blame:
1. Your Google My Business Profile Is Not Verified
Verification is the most critical step. If your profile isn’t verified, Google won’t display your business publicly.
2. Your Business Information Is Incorrect or Incomplete
Google relies on accurate information to display listings. If your business name, address, or phone number (NAP) is incorrect or missing, your listing may not appear. Even small inconsistencies, like using “Street” on one platform and “St.” on another, can create problems.
3. Your Business Information Is Outdated
Outdated hours, closed locations, or incorrect services can harm your visibility. Google deprioritizes listings with old or irrelevant information.
4. Your Business Is Not Relevant to Search Queries
If your business category or keywords don’t align with what users are searching for, Google won’t prioritize your listing. For example, using “Store” instead of “Pet Store” makes your listing less specific and harder to find.
5. Your Business Is Too Far from the Searcher
Google prioritizes businesses closer to the searcher’s location. If your business falls outside the proximity range, it may not appear unless it has strong relevance or prominence.
6. Your Business Has Low Prominence
Prominence is a key ranking factor. Businesses with few reviews, low ratings, or minimal online activity often rank lower in search results.
7. Your Business Listing Is Suspended
Violations of Google’s guidelines, like duplicate listings or using a virtual office address, can result in suspension. Suspended profiles are not displayed publicly.
8. Your Business Shares an Office Space
If your business shares an address with multiple others, Google may struggle to differentiate them. This can reduce visibility or cause your listing to be excluded.
9. Your Business Has Incorrect Category Tags
Categories tell Google what your business offers. If your primary or secondary categories are wrong, your listing won’t match relevant searches.
10. Your Business Website Provides a Poor User Experience
Google considers the quality of your website. A slow-loading, non-mobile-friendly, or poorly designed website can hurt your visibility.
11. Your Business Is Too New
New listings take time to appear. Google may delay visibility until the listing is verified and indexed.
12. Your Business Has Fake or Spammy Reviews
Fake reviews or spammy activity can harm your reputation and rankings. Google actively removes listings with suspicious review activity.
13. Your Business Has Few or No Reviews
Reviews and ratings build trust. Businesses with minimal reviews are less likely to rank well on Google Maps.
14. No Website Linked to Your Listing
Not linking a website to your GMB profile affects credibility and makes it harder for Google to validate your business information.
15. Duplicate Listings Exist
Duplicate listings confuse Google, and as a result, none may appear. Consolidate duplicate entries to avoid this issue.
Quick Fixes on How to Appear on Google Maps Again
If you are also typing this query, “My business does not show on Google Maps”, here are the best practices which you need to follow:
- Ensure your Google My Business (GMB) profile is verified. Re-verify if you’ve updated your address, phone number, or other critical details.
- Cross-check your Name, Address, and Phone Number (NAP) across your website, directories, and social platforms. Even minor inconsistencies, like abbreviations, can harm visibility.
- Identify and remove duplicate GMB listings using the “Suggest an Edit” feature. Use tools like Moz Local to track and manage duplicates efficiently.
- Optimize your profile with targeted keywords and ensure your business description includes both primary and secondary services.
- Use geotagged photos to validate your location and increase local relevance. Upload high-quality images frequently to signal activity.
- Encourage authentic customer reviews and respond promptly. A consistent review flow helps maintain prominence. Avoid sudden review spikes, which Google may flag as suspicious.
- Fix any suspension issues by auditing your listing for guideline violations. Use Google’s Reinstatement Request form with a clear explanation and supporting evidence.
- Build local backlinks from high-authority websites in your area. Partner with local chambers of commerce, newspapers, or community blogs to strengthen your domain authority.
- Check your website’s structured data (schema markup) to ensure it highlights key information like address, business hours, and services. Use tools like Google’s Rich Results Test to validate.
- Optimize your website for mobile devices, as slow-loading or poorly formatted pages can reduce your overall trust factor. Ensure alignment between GMB and website details.
- Manage service area overlap carefully if you have multiple locations. Use distinct business names or identifiers (e.g., suite numbers) to avoid confusion.
- Regularly audit your GMB insights to monitor profile performance. Adjust your strategy based on metrics like views, actions, and customer interactions.
