Backlinks Aren’t Dead: 7 Modern Link‑Building Tactics That Work
Back in the early 2020s, backlink strategies were largely a numbers game. Businesses chased quantity over quality—spinning guest posts, mass email outreach, and buying links from shady networks. These tactics worked for a while. But by 2024, Google’s algorithms had become smarter, stricter, and more context-aware.
At EvenDigit, we noticed a troubling trend:
Clients were investing heavily in content production and technical SEO, yet their organic traffic had plateaued. Rankings were stuck even when sites were fast, mobile-optimized, and keyword-rich.
So, we went deeper.
After auditing dozens of client accounts and competitor profiles, we found the culprit: outdated link-building practices that no longer passed Google’s evolving quality signals.
At EvenDigit, we decided to reboot our link-building strategy from the ground up.
Instead of chasing backlinks, we focused on earning authority through:
- Data-driven content assets
- Digital PR campaigns
- Context-rich partnerships and co-marketing
- Answering media queries with actual insights—not fluff
And the results were clear:
→ Rankings climbed.
→ Referral traffic increased.
→ EvenDigit was being mentioned in places that mattered—not just indexed, but trusted.
Backlinks didn’t die. They just grew up—and so did our strategy.
1. Digital PR & Press Links
Gone are the days of sending mass outreach emails. EvenDigit creates newsworthy, data-backed content and partners with journalists for coverage on relevant, high-authority media platforms.
“One editorial link from a niche SaaS publication drove more qualified leads than 50 generic guest posts.”
According to Backlinko, 67.3% of SEOs rate digital PR as the most effective tactic in 2024. This is echoed by BuzzStream, Reddit’s SEO community, and AuthorityHacker.
Why it works in 2025:
- Google now values contextual editorial links over low-effort backlinks.
- PR content also boosts brand signals, which feeds Google’s entity-based ranking systems.
- Bonus: it drives referral traffic and trust with human audiences.
2. Guest Posting on Niche Sites
Forget mass guest posting. EvenDigit hand-picks 3–5 niche-relevant publications per client and pitches custom content designed to resonate with their specific audiences.
According to Authority Hacker, 64.9% of link builders still rely on guest posts. When done right, this tactic remains highly effective, especially for referral traffic and thought leadership.
Link yield per campaign: 2–9 high-quality links (BuzzStream)
Why it works now:
- You’re building links and credibility in your niche.
- Links come from contextually aligned content, not fluff.
- These sites often have engaged audiences, which means real traffic, not just SEO juice.
3. Resource Page & Broken-Link Outreach
EvenDigit uses tools like Ahrefs to find outdated or broken links on industry resource pages. We then suggest one of our updated guides as a replacement.
Example:
A SaaS SEO guide replaced a broken link on a marketing tools directory, resulting in an instant DA 82 backlink.
According to Semrush, BuzzStream, and My Codeless Website, this remains one of the top 5 link-building methods in 2025.
🔎 Why it works:
- Site owners appreciate the fix, making this a high-conversion tactic.
- Backlinks land on relevant content, increasing topical authority.
- It builds relationships for future collaborations.
4. Multimedia & Infographic Link Building
EvenDigit creates visual content like infographics, videos, and data charts that other bloggers and journalists love to embed—often with attribution.
According to SEO.ai, visual content earns 25.8% more backlinks than plain text. This trend is growing due to AI-generated content platforms, which favor embeddable, structured assets.
Why it works:
- People link to unique, helpful visuals.
- Infographics are easily shared on social media and email newsletters.
- They’re great for co-branded campaigns or roundup posts.
5. HARO & Journalist Outreach
EvenDigit leverages Help A Reporter Out (HARO) and similar platforms to provide expert quotes, stats, and thought leadership to journalists on deadline.
According to Editorial.link, and BuzzStream, 46.3% of SEOs use HARO—but success comes when you stand out by adding original data, not generic answers.
Why it works:
- Links from top-tier news sites (Forbes, HubSpot, CMSWire).
- Also boosts your author entity and E-E-A-T signals.
- Positions EvenDigit as a go-to expert in the industry.
6. Manual Networking & Partnerships
EvenDigit’s team attends industry meetups, conferences, and local events in Delhi, Mumbai, and virtually to build real relationships—not just email threads.
One co-branded webinar with a marketing software partner earned 7 backlinks and 42 B2B leads.
Why it works:
- Authentic relationships lead to co-authored content, interviews, and event coverage.
- Local networking = less competition and faster trust-building.
- Helps in GEO optimization (Generative Engine Optimization) as AI bots increasingly reference branded content.
7. Strategic Brand Mentions & Entity SEO
EvenDigit’s content strategy includes securing brand mentions on niche forums, Reddit threads, LinkedIn roundups—even if unlinked.
Google and AI models like SGE increasingly reward entity-based relevance, so mentions matter, even when they’re not hyperlinked.
Why it works:
- Unlinked mentions feed Google’s knowledge graph and AI-driven SERPs.
- Boosts your chances of being recommended in AI summaries.
- Reinforces topical authority and expertise in your space.
